The text of Michel Leiris was originally illustrated by André Masson, Bacon executed four lithographs for this fundamental text in which Michel Leiris affirmed that "no beauty would be possible without the intervention of something accidental".
The accident is one component of Bacon's work, who created the first three lithographs in a sand-colored bullfighting arena bounded by an orange background and the crowd intently observing the confrontation of man and the bull. The fourth lithograph is a portrait of Michel Leiris represented by Bacon through the eyes of a strong and growing friendship between the artist and writer.
